Disclaimer: If you have any preconceived notions of who Tucker Max is, have any emotional reaction to hearing his name (positive or negative), I'd ask you to reserve judgement and listen to this episode with an open mind as it's probably way more valuable than you think.

Tucker Max is one of the most acclaimed authors you can come across.

Not only did Tucker become a #1 New York Times Best Seller with his book I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, but he hit the New York Times Best Sellers' list two other times after that.

And, he had 3 books on the New York Times Best Sellers' list at the same time.

Only 2 other authors can say they did that: Malcolm Gladwell and Michael Lewis.

"WHEN YOU PRODUCE SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE LIKE, MARKETING IS EASY."

He's even credited with having created his own genre known as fratire for recounting (in the most honest and open way you can imagine) his 20-something lifestyle: stories of getting so wasted that he would puke all over himself, detailed experiences of random and endless sex with strangers, and basically becoming a self-proclaimed Asshole.

Tucker has sold over 3 million books. Yet, he never set out to do any of this. He never expected to be an author.

It kinda happened by accident. (Tucker graduated from Duke Law, a Top-10 program.)

Here's what happened: after a crazy night out, Tucker would write an email about it and send it off to 9 of his friends. His friends found them to be so hilarious that they would share it with their friends, too.

"I DIDN'T START WRITING TO PROJECT AN IMAGE. I STARTED WRITING TO MAKE MY FRIENDS LAUGH."

It got to a point that Tucker's emails would be sent back to him from a complete different set of friends who had no clue that Tucker was the one who wrote the email in the first place.

That gave Tucker some validation. He realized that he had the entrepreneur's equivalent of product/market fit and decided to turn the concept into a book.

Tucker knows how to write in a way that connects with an audience, turns them into raving fans, and makes them want to spread his message for him.

In this episode of The Unleash Yourself Podcast, we talk about Tucker's transformation from Asshole to CEO, how to turn your idea into a book, write a book that's aligned with your specific goals (not everyone writes a book to become a NY Times Best Seller) and how Tucker's new business Scribe (which also kinda fell into his lap) can help you do it faster than you ever thought possible.

"CONFIDENCE COMES FROM DEMONSTRATED PERFORMANCE."

The thing I like about Tucker is that he got honest with himself, owned the fact that he wanted to make a change, and transformed himself completely. He didn't get stuck behind other people's expectations of who he was or feel bounded by those identifiers.

Talk about getting #UNLEASHED.

MORE SPECIFICALLY, ON THIS EPISODE OF THE UNLEASH YOURSELF PODCAST WITH Tucker Max, YOU’LL LEARN:

  • Why Tucker went to law school and why most people go to law school for the wrong reasons.

  • What Tucker did that got him fired from his first job with a law firm after only a few weeks and how this led to his career as an author (he would have never guessed it at the time).

  • How writing emails for his 9 friends led to external validation.

  • Why the New York Times created a new genre for Tucker's books.

  • Why none of the men who tried to imitate Tucker's writing style ever got any traction.

  • How Tucker was able to have 3 books on the New York Times Bestseller's list at the same time, and why his answer is MUCH simpler than you'd think.

  • How Tucker transitioned from the Tucker Max you first heard about to the Tucker Max of today.

  • How the idea for Tucker's new business Scribe fell into his lap.

  • How to write, publish, and profit from writing a book and how to do it in faster than you ever thought possible. (Hint: Tucker explains how to do it in 12 hours.)

  • Why not knowing anything about someone's story or idea allows you to ask the right questions.

  • How to figure out if you have a book in you, and how Tucker can turn your idea into a published book.

  • And much, much more.

If you watch the UFC, you might recognize this week's guest.

You may even know him as "The Spaniard" instead of Charlie Brenneman.

You may have seen him on Spike TV's reality TV show "Pros vs Joes", which he won.

You may remember his major upset over Rick Story in 2011 which is ranked as the #113 most memorable moment in UFC history, ahead of GSP's return from injury to beat Carlos Condit and reclaim the championship.

"When I get to the point of performance, I do best when I stop thinking. I just rely on my habits. My training. My preparation. Just go. Just go go go go go."

Or, you may know him as an author, speaker and entrepreneur.

Charlie Brenneman was a high school Spanish teacher when he decided to quit his job and take aim at fighting in the UFC.

What started out as a dream soon turned into a reality. Charlie fought 11 fights in the UFC and went head-to-head with some of the best fighters in the world, such as UFC Champion Johny Hendricks and current top-ranked light heavyweight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

The key ingredient in his climb to the top?

Hard work.

"I may have mentally become a fighter, but it was more-so the technical things, the tactics, the strategies, the physical actions, that I just repeated over and over again - and then by default, I became a fighter. If you want to put the time in, I could teach you to be a fighter too."

In this episode of the Unleash Yourself podcast, Charlie tells us how he worked his way to the top of and gives us an insight into the mind of a professional fighter.

We talk about work ethic, the power of waking up early, how to accomplish more through accountability, letting go of fear, accepting risk, and allowed yourself to feel UNLEASHED.

MORE SPECIFICALLY, ON THIS EPISODE OF THE UNLEASH YOURSELF PODCAST WITH Charlie Brenneman, YOU’LL LEARN:

  • How Charlie went from high school Spanish teacher to UFC fighter.
  • The defining moment in Charlie's college career that propelled him to fight for the Division  All-American title when he was on the brink of quitting the sport entirely.
  • How Charlie got cast on Spike TV's "Pros vs Joes" while being a high school teacher and what it was like to participate in a reality TV show.
  • The mindset that Charlie had that differentiated him from all the other contestants and how it allowed him to win the series and go on to fight in the UFC.
  • Why having a systematic approach to your work allows you to remove the self-doubt and achieve beyond your limitations.
  • The concept of talent versus skill and why Charlie believes talent is overrated.
  • Why Charlie wakes up before the sunrise every morning and why waking up at 4:30am allowed him to become a top-performer in all areas of his life.
  • How to analyze your strengths and weaknesses and use your assets to your full advantage.
  • Charlie's answer to the question: "Is the risk worth the reward when your not a top ranked fighter?"
  • How Charlie prepares for a fight and why over analysis is not the best approach to take.
  • How to remove fear from your mind and focus on the task at hand.
  • The life-changing moment that propelled Charlie to the #7 ranked UFC fighter in the world and why beating Rick Story on 24-hours notice is one of the most memorable moments in UFC history.
  • And much, much more.

It's not every day that you have the opportunity to speak to someone who's done something no one else on the entire planet has done.

Something most people laughed at and called impossible.

Something that doctors said was irrational.

Something that he may die doing.

So today, I'm super excited to share this phenomenal conversation with James "The Iron Cowboy" Lawrence who completed 50 Ironman distance triathlons, in 50 consecutive days, in 50 different states.

Mind-blowing stuff.

"You have to shift your mentality of trying to prove everyone else wrong, to proving yourself right. You have to turn it into positive energy and focus on what you can control."

And for those of  you who don't know what an Ironman distance triathlon is, let me break it down for you:

Swim 2.4 miles (3.8km)

Bike 112 miles (180 km)

Run 26.2 miles (42.2 km)

Having done an Ironman myself in 2014, I have to admit that I thought this challenge was impossible when James first announced it.

Forget doing an Ironman, but if you've tried doing ANYTHING every day for 50 straight days, you know how hard it is to be consistent. Even if the task was as simple as flossing.

"There's always enough hours in the day for what you want to accomplish. It's just a matter of what you put a priority on."

So if you want to set a massive goal and actually achieve it, you'll want to listen to this episode of the Unleash Yourself podcast because James talks about the power of setting massive goals, how to build a team around you who's vital to your success, how to build your mental toughness so you'll never give up, and much, much more.

"Huge monstrous goals  are never accomplished on their own. You need to have a supporting crew."

You'll also get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to set a Guinness World Record and accomplish something no one else in the world has ever done.

There are some incredible life lessons to be learned and you'll walk alway from this episode with incredible inspiration and energy to attack life in a whole new way.

James is an absolute beast!

"Races #16, #17, and #18 were very hard physically on me. I fell asleep on my bike and crashed. I Also lost most of my toenails."

MORE SPECIFICALLY, ON THIS EPISODE OF THE UNLEASH YOURSELF PODCAST WITH James Lawrence, YOU’LL LEARN:

  • How James proved the entire world wrong by doing 50 Ironman distance triathlons in 50 days in 50 different states.
  • Why James had to deal with overwhelming amounts of negativity when he announced the 50-50-50 and how he allowed that to fuel him.
  • Why James' initial mentality of "Let's prove everyone wrong" shifted to "Let's go out and prove ourselves right."
  • How to cultivate your mental toughness by putting yourself into tough situations where you have an opportunity to face your fear, experience failure, and create a better you.
  • The sport that James focused on in high school that he now credits a lot of his mental toughness to.
  • How James used visualization and planned every course with GPS prior to the 50-50-50 so that he already went through each race before the start of the challenge.
  • What James did to make sure he had enough fuel in the tank after only sleeping an average of 4 hours a night during the challenge.
  • What an average day during the 50-50-50 challenge looked like, from the minute James woke up to the minute he packed the van and drove to the next state.
  • How to accomplish more by creating a team.
  • How to create massive goals, how to associate the right time-frame for those goals, and how to achieve them by being realistic, flexible, and creative.
  • James' view on work/life balance.
  • Why James adopted something called "The Power Minute" and how you can use it to your advantage to have intense focus when times are tough.
  • Who James looks up to for inspiration and motivation.
  • Why James still went ahead with the 50-50-50 even though doctors told him he could die doing it.
  • What James is up to now that the 50-50-50 is over and what his plans are for the future.

Many of us want freedoms that corporate life just can't offer.

We want to work on projects that are fulfilling and give us an opportunity for growth. We want to have enough time for a fulfilling social life outside of after-work drinks. To have financial security beyond what a pay cheque can offer, and to have the freedom to travel the world for more than 2 weeks at a time.

Matt Inglot craved this too and today he can proudly say that he's able to enjoy all of them as a part of his daily life.

But, achieving them took 7 years of unnecessary mistakes that nearly destroyed his health, his business, and his sanity.

Over those 7 years of feeling stuck and making the wrong moves, he figured out how to transform his business and took the idea of freelancing to a whole new level.

"It has created these kind of freedoms that I want to have, that a normal job can't offer."

And, Matt explains that the key to it all is to start changing the way you think about who your clients are.

By doing so, he was able to rethink what his services actually meant to his clients and because of it, he was able to triple his rates and sign contracts with clients who were ready to pay him, cash in hand, with zero pushback.

"The path to being a freelancer and being successful at it is finding some problem that people tend to have, or businesses tends to have, and finding a way to solve it."

So, whether you're already freelancing but need to find a way to sign higher value clients or if you want to make some money on the side as a freelancer with dreams of travelling the world while freelancing from your laptop, you're going to love this episode of the Unleash Yourself podcast!

Get ready for a complete freelance transformation!

Every once and a while something special unexpectedly pops up in your email inbox.

For me, it was an email from Meghan Telpner.

And today, not only am I lucky enough to have Meghan on the Unleash Yourself podcast, but I'm also able to call her my friend.

My favorite thing about Meghan's story is that she had no idea that she would be doing what she does today, and not only did she find a new passion in it, but she turned it into a 7-figure business.

It all started after she graduated with a solo-backpacking trip to Africa.

"I just had this desire to go and explore and see someone else's interpretation or someone else's reality of real life and see what was going on in the world."

I'm a huge proponent of travel and I've travelled solo quite extensively myself so I'm not surprised that Meghan's life changed completely when she decided on taking this adventure of a lifetime.

She discovered a new avenue; a new path she wanted to explore.

And, this wasn't a new country or exotic island, it was her passion for food, nutrition, and the ability to create in the kitchen.

Today, Meghan runs The Academy of Culinary Nutrition and has certified over 700 people in over 30 countries.

I find it so inspiring that Meghan enjoys sharing how she got started, and how her first steps with the business was out of her own apartment, where she would host "Cooking Parties" from her tiny kitchen.

"Looking back, if I could just tell myself one thing, it's like "just relax, it's going to work out, this is all relevant, it all matters, it's all a part of your process."

It wasn't an overnight success, but Meghan was determined to make it work no matter what she needed to do: from emailing her entire personal contact list to decorating her bicycle with flowers and handing out flyers on the street to the general public.

"I was willing to try anything!"

Along the way, she learned everything she could about starting a business, scaling, hiring, creating trust, and ultimately feeling the confidence to let her personality shine through her brand.

"I think that most of us, when we stop trying to be like everyone else, are incredible human beings. The biggest challenge I see is that people are working to emulate those they see as being successful...and that's what comes up as inauthentic."

Today, she shares everything in episode #46 of the Unleash Yourself podcast! So, if you want to build your business incrementally and put in the work needed to build a 7-figure business, you're in the right place.

P.S. Here's the 1-page of notes I took during our conversation:

It's not everyday that you have the opportunity to speak with someone who's been named a "Moxie Maven" by the White House, given a keynote talk at the United Nations, and is regularly sought after for her professional advice by media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Women's Health Magazine, Forbes, NBC, and CNN.

I was honoured to have an opportunity to speak to Alexia Vernon because she is a go-to thought leader, speaker, coach and trainer for executives, entrepreneurs and rising leaders.

Alexia is unparalleled in her ability to move audiences to identify and slay their limiting beliefs, reflect and reframe thinking and behaviour, and take aggressive and achievable action.

"If you know you have a big idea, a message, that can positively improve peoples lives, its not an opportunity to get on stage - it's a responsibility."

In this conversation, we dive deep into the psychological obstacles we all face as entrepreneurs when it comes to communicating our best selves to our followers, audience, or peers.

There's so much value in having the ability to influence action and inspire others to change their lives with the use of our words, and Alexia is a master at doing so.

She also gives us a few secrets to engaging an audience and connecting with them on a personal level, which is the most powerful thing you can do to create a lasting impact.

"Whenever I chose to go to a live event and I'm sitting in a room and I'm just being filled with information for hours on end, I always get so frustrated because I feel like it's such a big missed opportunity for creating an engaged community."

If you've ever doubted yourself and your worthiness as a speaker or felt like there are no new and fresh ideas worth spreading, you're going to love this episode of the Unleash Yourself podcast.

MORE SPECIFICALLY, ON THIS EPISODE OF THE UNLEASH YOURSELF PODCAST WITH Alexia Vernon, YOU’LL LEARN:

Some entrepreneurs start a business and grow with it. They go from the founder to being the CEO of their multi-million dollar company and never leave it.

Others start a business, watch it grow to 7-figures and then start another.

John Mautner started 5 multi-million dollar businesses over the past 25 years.

At 26 years old, John's first business (that he explains in detail in this podcast interview) was named as one of America's 500 fastest growing companies by Inc. Magazine.

"I was just following the dream and the dream was so compelling that I just followed it to wherever it took me."

The business you ask?  Well, if you've ever had a roasted nut at a sports event, amusement park, or anywhere else... its because John not only created this business, but created a specialty food that is now known around the world.

He literally started from the bottom with one cart in a low-traffic mall, selling $30 of almonds per day, to deals with the NBA and quickly hitting over $100 million dollars in revenue 6 years later.

"Every dollar that I made I plowed back into the company, and I noticed that the more money I put back it, the faster the company grew."

He hustled his way to the top.

And, this wasn't a one hit wonder for John.

He went on to start many multi-million dollar businesses, helped others achieve peak performance and success in their businesses, and along the way outlined the top 10 reasons why most businesses never reach the peak of their potential success...which he outlines in his new book: The Profit PatternThe Top 10 Tools To Transform Your Business, Drive Performance, Empower Your People, Accelerate Productivity and Profitability .

John shares his story and all his trade secrets in this episode of the Unleash Yourself podcast

MORE SPECIFICALLY, ON THIS EPISODE OF THE UNLEASH YOURSELF PODCAST WITH John, YOU’LL LEARN:

  • How John felt working in a cubicle and the exact thought he had that made him quit his lucrative job in finance at 26 years old.
  • Why John wanted to start a roasted nut company and how he dealt with everyone who thought he was nuts...no pun intended.
  • The early stages of building a business from scratch: how John hustled his way to partnerships.
  • How John over-delivered when someone asked him to send them a sample of his product. The reason why he did NOT send them a sample, but what he did instead.
  • How John dealt with the early struggles of only selling 10 bags of nuts per day at 3$ per bag.
  • The importance of location and traffic flow. Why moving his cart to a different location skyrocketed his sales.
  • How he locked-in a deal with the Orlando Magic.
  • The way to create your own opportunities and the value of face-to-face communication.
  • Why John thinks fear stands for F.E.A.R. = False Evidence Appearing Real.
  • Why successful people are decisive, just like Jim Palmer talked about in EP 032
  • How John scaled to $100,00/month in sales with the same product, just by finding the right location, and how he quickly then multiplied that to $200,000 overnight by adding 1 cart to his fleet.
  • How John built a team of employees and trained them to ensure they roasted the perfect almond just like he would, so his almonds were consistent across the world.
  • How John went international and started opening carts all around the world with 0 advertising.
  • How John 3x his company's revenue every year for 5 straight years. He grew from 300k to 1M to 3M to 9M to 30M to 90M and then hit over 100M in revenue in his 6th year.
  • Why John sold his business and the #1 reason why he likes creating new businesses from the ground up.
  • The top 10 things you need to be doing to create one of the 500 fastest growing companies in America, like John did.
  • And, much much more!

043: Claim Your Right 2 Freedom, Start A Business Based On Your Passions, And Travel As A Suitcase Entrepreneur (Featuring Natalie Sisson).

I've been travelling quite a bit over the last 2 years; living a minimalistic lifestyle out of my blue Gregory backpack while adapting to different cultures in various continents around the world.

I've experimented with fast travel and slow travel.

I've struggled with balancing my desire for daily adventure with my ambition to build a successful business.

It's been an interesting journey.

There's a lot more to being successful living out of a backpack than it seems. It's not all waterfalls and Instagram photos. That only lasts so long if you don't have a viable revenue generating business behind it all.

This is exactly what today's guest on the Unleash Yourself podcast has become a master at.

Natalie Sisson is known as The Suitcase Entrepreneur because since leaving New Zealand in 2006, she's lived out of her suitcase and travelled the world (69 countries and counting!) all while running an online business that allows her massive freedom and a multiple six-figure income.

"I was pretty dedicated and committed to having more freedom in my life and I knew what my strengths were."

I loved chatting with Natalie because not only did we talk about building a business around our passions and how to adapt our businesses to our personal growth over the years, but we talked about some of the struggles and difficulties we face as suitcase entrepreneurs that you may not even know exist.

"When I first made money online, it opened my mind to what I could do. From there, I kept testing and asking my audience what they wanted and went on to make solutions for them."

So if living out of a suitcase or backpack seems to be your thing and you prefer to buy experiences over stuff, you're going to love this episode!

P.S. In this episode you'll find out where I'm going to be travelling to next!

MORE SPECIFICALLY, ON THIS EPISODE OF THE UNLEASH YOURSELF PODCAST WITH Natalie, YOU’LL LEARN:

  • What freedom means to Natalie and why she thinks it's a right and not a privilege.
  • How Natalie decides where to "settle" and how she knows it's the right place and time to do so.
  • Why community matters for digital nomads and suitcase entrepreneurs.
  • How I found freedom in commitment and how to plan ahead in order to enjoy the present.
  • Why it's important to start and build your business before you decide to travel and how to know when you're ready to hit the road.
  •  What it means to be a leading learner and why you can be one too.
  • How Natalie created her first online course and what she learned from her first experience creating a video course.
  • What happened after Natalie made her first sale and how she learned how to scale her business from there.
  • How Natalie dealt with a failed launch and what she did to unleash herself from her fears and self-doubt.
  • How Natalie became The Suitcase Entrepreneur and how that was the biggest turning point in her journey.
  • The importance of sharing your journey and why people follow you through your transitions.
  • Natalie's #1 piece of advice for people wanting to create an information product or online course.
  • How to accept the freedom mindset and create the right headspace to enjoy more freedom in your life.
  • Find out if Natalie ever feels pressure to travel more and more rather than settle in one place because she's branded herself as the suitcase entrepreneur.
  • Why Natalie and I are both going to Lisbon.
  • How to create financial freedom by monetizing your passions.
  • And, much much more!

My answer to Natalie's survey on Right2Freedom.com:

1. What does freedom mean to you? How would you define it?

Freedom is an emotion. It's a feeling that means flexibility. It means not feeling bounded to something, both physically and emotionally. It means doing what you like, whenever you like to do it. It means being vulnerable and surrendering, without being afraid. It means feeling Unleashed.
